Merlin Chain and BitcoinOS launch Grail Bridge with ZKP for secure transactions.
Merlin Chain, a layer-2 (L2) scaling solution, has teamed up with BitcoinOS, a Bitcoin rollups protocol, to launch the BitcoinOS Grail Bridge.
As shared in a press release with Cointelegraph, the partnership aims to enhance the security and scalability of cross-chain transactions without relying on centralized trust mechanisms.
Jeff Yin, founder of Merlin Chain, highlighted that the collaboration offers a “trustless, decentralized” bridge for “Bitcoin-native assets.”
“Integrating BitcoinOS’s Grail Bridge provides users with zero-knowledge verification, delivering enhanced security. This enables seamless asset transfers between Merlin Chain and Bitcoin’s layer-1.”
Focus on cross-chain security
The partnership's primary goal is to introduce the Grail Bridge, incorporating zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology for trustless bridging, directly built on the Bitcoin blockchain.
The press release notes that the innovation eliminates the need for centralized security solutions, such as multisig or multiparty computation (MPC), commonly used in cross-chain transactions.
Yin emphasized that this collaboration marks “just the beginning,” with both parties working towards “a more secure and interoperable Bitcoin ecosystem.”
Challenges and Future Developments
Yin also discussed the potential challenges of implementing the BitcoinOS Grail Bridge on Merlin Chain, including the need for rigorous testing of new technologies like BitSNARK for zero-knowledge proofs, to ensure smooth integration without vulnerabilities.
He added that creating an infrastructure capable of handling higher transaction volumes without compromising security will be essential moving forward.
“Future developments could include expanding the Grail Bridge’s capabilities, launching decentralized applications, and exploring innovations to enhance trustless interoperability across the Bitcoin network.”
First ZKP on Bitcoin mainnet
On July 24 at 11:22 pm UTC, BitcoinOS successfully verified the first ZKP on the Bitcoin mainnet, unlocking new functionality and scalability for the blockchain.
Edan Yago, co-founder of BitcoinOS, told Cointelegraph that this breakthrough signifies “an era where Bitcoin evolves beyond just digital gold.”
Yago described it as a “chapter” where Ethereum, Solana, and other layer-1 networks face growing competition from Bitcoin.
