Tokyo-listed gaming studio Gumi purchases Bitcoin worth 1 billion yen.
Tokyo-listed gaming company Gumi has made a significant move into the blockchain sector by acquiring Bitcoin worth 1 billion yen ($6.6 million). This purchase aligns with Gumi’s broader strategy of expanding into Web3 and managing high-quality digital assets.
In a translated announcement from Feb. 10, Gumi's board of directors approved the Bitcoin acquisition, citing the need to strengthen its presence in the blockchain industry. The company also revealed plans to generate additional revenue through the Babylon staking protocol.
According to the statement, Gumi is actively growing its involvement in node management and aims to become the first publicly traded Japanese company to serve as a validator for Babylon. The Bitcoin staking protocol has already seen $3.5 billion worth of BTC staked as of December.
This isn’t Gumi’s first venture into blockchain. The company leverages blockchain technology to develop new content and services and has a roadmap that includes acquiring and managing high-value tokens globally.
Through its venture capital arm, Gumi Cryptos Capital, based in Silicon Valley, the firm invests in early-stage blockchain projects. Notable investments include OpenSea and 1inch.
Gumi joins a growing list of publicly traded companies adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets. Japanese firm Metaplanet adopted a Bitcoin strategy last May and recently made its largest-ever BTC acquisition, valued at nearly $60 million.
In the U.S., Semler Scientific held 1,273 BTC as of November, while companies like KULR Technology, Matador Technologies, and Quantum BioPharma also hold Bitcoin.
Meanwhile, Michael Saylor’s rebranded Strategy acquired an additional 7,633 BTC last week at an average price of $97,255. Beyond Strategy, Bitcoin miners are among the largest corporate BTC holders.
Mining company CleanSpark, for example, added over 1,000 BTC to its treasury in Q4, bringing its total holdings to 10,556 BTC.
